THE UNFINISHED SELF
The Unfinished Self is a conceptual mixed-media installation from my MFA thesis project Home / Unhome, exploring healing as an ongoing conversation with oneself. At the center of the installation, a projected video transforms the mirror into a symbolic space where I appear to speak with my own reflection through moments of joy, sadness, doubt, encouragement, and vulnerability. Recorded over consecutive days, these conversations reveal the changing emotional states that shape identity and suggest that healing is never complete, but continuously unfolds through self-reflection and compassion. The mirror is framed by a motif inspired by ancient Persian ornamentation, from which thorn-like forms emerge as symbols of emotional wounds and unresolved memories. Animated balloons, representing childhood and innocence, drift through the space. Some rise freely, while others become caught in the thorns and burst, reflecting the reality that healing is marked by both progress and setbacks. Rather than offering resolution, The Unfinished Self embraces healing as an unfinished process—one that begins by returning to ourselves, listening with honesty, and continuing the dialogue even when certainty remains out of reach.
